When a conflict of interest arises, the priority is to handle it openly and with safeguards that preserve objectivity and trust. Start by disclosing the conflict to the client and any relevant stakeholders so everyone understands where bias might come from. Then assess the potential impact to determine whether the conflict could influence judgments or recommendations and what controls are needed. Next, recuse from decisions or activities where the conflict exists, ensuring those tasks are handled by someone who isn’t compromised by the conflict. If required, obtain informed consent from the client (or the appropriate authority) after they’ve been given a clear explanation of the conflict and the steps taken to mitigate it. Finally, document all actions taken—the disclosure, the assessment, the safeguards or recusal, and any consent—to create an auditable record and show due care. Ignoring the conflict, keeping it confidential, or reassigning without documentation fails to protect objectivity and accountability and can erode trust and expose parties to risk.
